Dear Hayllar,

The intimate professional relations which have, for so long a period, existed between the firm to which I belong and yours, as well as the friendly social intercourse, which has been maintained between us since my arrival here, cause me to feel it to be a duty to bring to your notice certain statements most injurious to you which are in circulation in the colony. I have steadily declined to listen to the unauthenticated rumours which, from time to time past, have been current in Hongkong in connection with your name, but yesterday Dr Eitel, in his avowed capacity of private Secretary to the Governor, placed in my hands copies of correspondence which has lately passed between yourself, Sir John Pope Hennessy and the Secretary
